Take advantage of our free blood pressure checks
High blood pressure, also known as ‘hypertension’, is a serious yet often overlooked condition in dogs and cats. It’s commonly referred to as a ‘silent killer’ as your pet will often show no symptoms, yet, left untreated, it can cause serious health issues. Regular monitoring is the best way to keep your pet healthy and happy.
And the good news? While hypertension is serious, it’s a manageable condition. Early detection, regular veterinary check-ups and appropriate treatment can help prevent severe complications and improve your pet’s quality of life.
Throughout March and April, we’re providing free blood pressure checks for all dogs and cats over eight years of age. We can schedule a quick and painless blood pressure check at your convenience, simply contact our team to book an appointment with one of our nursing team.
FAQs
What causes high blood pressure in pets?
High blood pressure in dogs and cats can be primary, where it occurs without an identifiable underlying cause, or, more commonly, secondary, meaning it arises because of another condition. Some of the most common underlying causes include:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
- Hyperthyroidism (in cats)
- Cushing’s Disease (in dogs)
- Diabetes mellitus
What are the symptoms of high blood pressure in pets?
Hypertension is often referred to as a ‘silent killer’ because it may not present obvious symptoms until significant organ damage has occurred. However, be vigilant for signs such as:
- Sudden blindness or dilated (enlarged) pupils
- Nose bleeds
- Seizures (fits) or disorientation
- Increased drinking and urination
- Weakness or lethargy
How is high blood pressure managed in pets?
To successfully manage high blood pressure in pets, we need to treat the underlying cause, if there is one, and start medication to lower your pet’s blood pressure. We may also need to make dietary adjustments and your pet will need regular check-ups. With the correct treatment plan in place, your pet can continue to enjoy a good quality of life.
What can I expect if I book my pet in for a blood pressure check?
Our team will run through everything in detail with you before the procedure. But, as an overview, your pet’s blood pressure will be measured during a nurse clinic, using specialised equipment designed for pets. A consistently high reading often confirms a diagnosis. If your pet’s blood pressure is reading as high, depending on the level, a follow up appointment will be recommended with either one of our nurses, or one of our vets, for repeat measurements and further investigations if required.
